The CDM Executive Board at its sixtieth meeting (EB60) accredited the South African based company Carbon Check (Pty) Ltd as the only Designated Operating Entity on the continent.

This could boost carbon credit generation business throughout Africa. CDM projects can help local communities in Africa by providing opportunities for sustainable development, creating employment or increased economic activity, improving air quality and transferring technology.  CDM projects can also earn carbon credits that are tradeable and saleable, generating hard currency income into those countries of operation.

Carbon Check has been designated to undertake validation/verification and certification for nine of the current fifteen scopes under the UNFCCC.

AGRA works to achieve a food secure and prosperous Africa through the promotion of rapid, sustainable agricultural growth based on smallholder farmers. Smallholders--the majority women--produce most of Africa's food, and do so with minimal resources and little government support. AGRA aims to ensure that smallholders have what they need to succeed: good seeds and healthy soils; access to markets, information, financing, storage and transport; and policies that provide them with comprehensive support. Through developing Africa's high-potential breadbasket areas, while also boosting farm productivity across more challenging environments, AGRA works to transform smallholder agriculture into a highly productive, efficient, sustainable and competitive system, and do so while protecting the environment.

CC DARE: Greening Africa’s local Economy using small scale Actions linking Adaptation to Business and Economic chains

Africa’s development and economic growth needs adaptation to climate change that makes it resilient to future climate impacts. The economic systems and natural systems characterizing Africa are evolving at different time and spatial scales but severely affected by climate change. Therefore, actions that regulate climate risks in both systems require flexibility in using top-down or bottom-up actions that serve policy processes and provide solutions for those highly at risks. Climate change adaptation actions should therefore expand the frontiers of development and generate new economic opportunities by providing the right framework for catalysing green growth and eradicating poverty. To achieve this, evidence-based approaches are required to support countries make sound policies and overcome potential barriers in taking actions nationally and also thinking beyond their national boundaries. Linking adaptation strategies to business and economic chains is likely to provide climate proofing and generate co-benefits that transcend cash profits. Choosing the right delivering approach will determine the achievement of fast actions, efficiency and effectiveness of adaptation measures.

The activities of the CC Dare Programme jointly implemented by UNEP and UNDP in Sub-Saharan Africa has demonstrated how small-scale solutions can trigger new actions, empower people into self-owned actions, provide the right framework to catalyse synergies between economic development and adaptation, facilitate transition into green growth and resilient development, shape national policies, including recruiting new actors and sectors to expand the implementation of adaptation as well as addressing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

CC DARE Contribution to the First Africa Green Investment Gateway Conference

To avoid re-inventing the wheel and fast tracking uptake and replication processes for the implementation of actions that generate new economic opportunities as well as providing the right framework for catalysing green growth, the First Africa Green Investment Gateway Conference will provide an important opportunity to showcase:

1.the outcomes of nationally demonstrated actions using the CC Dare action delivering model in building national capacity, inspiring policy making processes and empowering countries in undertaking bigger actions that create economic opportunities.

2.
how CC Dare model is catalyzing and providing alternative pathways for low-carbon transition, and resource efficient economy in Africa, and

3.
How the model can be replicated within the bigger framework of national development programmes in other regions around the globe.
